Waymo's Driverless Vehicles Planned for London Roads in 2026.

The US-based enterprise Waymo has announced that its self-driving vehicles will be on offer for use on London's roads starting next year.

London Becomes Pioneering European City for Self-Driving Taxi Service.

London will be established as the inaugural European city to host an driverless taxi service, comparable with those currently familiar in San Francisco and several American locations using Waymo's innovative platform.

Initial Trials to Start with Trained Operators.

Waymo confirmed that its vehicles are presently heading to London and will commence navigating on the city's roads in the next few weeks with safety drivers in control.

Waymo – originally established as a spin-off from the tech giant's autonomous vehicle program and belonging to the same parent group – indicated it would scale up operations and partner with the government transport body and Transport for London to acquire the required licenses to provide completely driverless trips by 2026.

Growing Presence in Self-Driving Transport Across London.

Other companies, such as Uber and the British technology firm Wayve, have also revealed their own intentions to pilot self-driving vehicles in the city next year.

This follows the UK authorities confirming it would speed up guidelines permitting public trials to occur before laws enabling self-driving vehicles becomes law in full.

“I am thrilled that Waymo aims to introduce their services to London next year, under our planned testing initiative,” stated the government minister, the secretary.

“Boosting the autonomous vehicle industry will increase available mobility choices while also bringing work, funding, and prospects to the UK. Innovative funding like this will help us deliver our mission to be global pioneers in new technology and lead economic growth.”

Full Launch Projected After Automated Vehicles Act Is Enforced.

A more extensive deployment of driverless cabs is projected in the UK after the Automated Vehicles Act comes completely into force in the latter part of 2027.

The Company's Existing Presence in the United Kingdom and Beyond.

Waymo already has connections to the UK after opening its pioneering European technical center in Oxford in 2019.

The company is also introducing operations in Tokyo using Jaguar Land Rover electric vehicles, marking its second existing project beyond the United States.

“We've demonstrated how to effectively grow fully autonomous taxi services, and we can’t wait to extend the advantages of our technology to the Britain,” remarked the company executive, explaining that the technology was “enhancing transport security and travel more inclusive”.

Proven History in the US.

Waymo began its driverless cabs in 2020 and currently claims it has served over a vast number of riders in the US.

Regardless of some concerning events, Waymo stated that evidence demonstrated that vehicles controlled by people were involved in accidents that injured people on foot at a much higher rate than its self-driving fleet.
