Trump Continues Criticism on Marjorie Taylor Greene Amid Push to Release Jeffrey Epstein Documents

Greetings and salutations to the US politics ongoing coverage. I am Tom Ambrose, and I will be providing you with all the latest developments over the next few hours.

Trump Rejects Greene's Danger Claims

We begin with the news that Donald Trump doubled down on his criticism of Republican lawmaker Marjorie Taylor Greene on Sunday, despite his shift on opposing the release of the Jeffrey Epstein documents.

He continued to dismiss her claim that his criticism were endangering her and said he did not think anyone was focusing on her. Greene remarked on Saturday that the President's social media posts had triggered a surge of threats directed at her.

“Greene the ‘Traitor’,” he said, speaking of the lawmaker. “I don’t think her life is in danger... I don’t think anybody is concerned for her,” the president told the press before entering his presidential plane on Sunday night.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, a US House of Representatives representative from the state of Georgia who was previously considered a staunch Trump supporter, has lately adopted stances contrary to the president. She said on Saturday she has been alerted by private security firms warning about her security and that harsh attacks against her have previously led to death threats.

Jeffrey Epstein Documents Release Initiative

This dispute occurred while the President urged his fellow Republicans in Congress to vote for the release of files related to the deceased disgraced financier Epstein, reversing his earlier resistance to such a move.

Trump’s post on his Truth Social came after House speaker Mike Johnson previously stated that he believed a vote on releasing justice department files in the Epstein case should help put to rest allegations “that he [Trump] has any involvement”.

He posted on his social media account on that day: “House Republicans should vote to release the Epstein documents, because we have no secrets.

“Now is the moment to put behind us this Democrat Hoax perpetrated by far-left activists in order to deflect from the Great Success of the GOP, including our recent Victory on the government funding issue,” he added.

Although the President and Epstein were photographed together decades ago, the commander-in-chief has claimed the two men had a disagreement before Epstein’s convictions. Messages disclosed last week by a House committee showed the convicted sex offender, who took his own life in jail in recent years, believed the President “knew about the girls,” though it was not clear what that statement meant.

Additional Developments

  • GOP representative Thomas Massie had questioned the President over whether the US president was making a “last-ditch effort” to keep the complete records on the deceased sex offender Epstein from being disclosed by ordering a fresh investigation. Massie and Democratic congressman Representative Khanna, the two US representatives spearheading the bipartisan push to have all the documents held by the authorities public both expressed new worries about the steps by the White House.
  • US forces carried out a further attack on an suspected narcotics smuggling vessel in the Pacific region on the weekend, killing three individuals aboard, the Department of Defense said on Sunday. “Intelligence confirmed that the vessel was involved in illegal drug trafficking, transiting along a known narco-trafficking route, and transporting drugs,” the military command announced in a message on online platforms.
  • Trump indicated the US may begin discussions with Nicolas Maduro, the Venezuelan president, who is under growing scrutiny from Washington amid a huge US military buildup in the Caribbean. “We could initiate some talks with the Venezuelan leader, and we’ll observe how that develops. Venezuela would want to talk,” the US president remarked on that day, in one of the initial indications of a possible path to easing the growingly strained situation in the area.
  • Trump on Sunday dismissed worries about right-wing pundit Tucker Carlson's latest discussion with a far-right activist recognized for his antisemitic views, which has created a division within the GOP. The President defended the host, noting the ex-media personality has “said positive remarks about me in the past.” He said if he wants to speak with Nick Fuentes, whose supporters consider themselves defending the nation's white, Christian identity, then “people have to make up their own minds.” Trump did not condemn Carlson or Fuentes.
  • Trump suggested on that day that he intends to have a discussion with New York City’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and stated they will “work something out”, in what could be a detente for the Republican president and Democratic political star who have portrayed one another as opponents. He has for an extended period slammed Mr Mamdani, incorrectly labelling him as a “communist” and forecasting the ruin of his city, New York, if the progressive were elected.
  • A group of 17 trans military personnel has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for denying them early retirement pensions and entitlements. The legal filing, filed in federal court, describes the administration's action against them as “illegal and unjustified”.
