Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation head James the former director has pleaded not guilty to giving untrue testimony to lawmakers and obstructing a legislative process.

The former director's legal representative submitted the answer on his behalf in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

Patrick Fitzgerald declared he would try to have the legal matter dismissed for multiple causes including that his the accused, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

The former director was charged soon after the former president urged his attorney general to move forward against him.

During the hearing on Wednesday, his attorney the legal representative told the magistrate they intended to present multiple petitions to dismiss the proceedings before a trial, claiming the government's case was retaliatory and that a federal prosecutor was unlawfully assigned to take over the legal matter.

The former director's case was originally overseen by the original attorney, who stepped down under scrutiny from Donald Trump after his probe into a different political adversary - NY AG Letitia James - was unable to initiate prosecution.

Background Context

Current Allegations

Government attorneys claim the former director provided false information to Congress during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They allege he misled the Senate by saying he had not authorized someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to leak to journalistic entities information about the government examinations.

Government lawyers also accuse James Comey of "wrongfully trying to affect, block and slow" the panel by giving misleading testimony to it.
