Federal Government Poised to Dispatch Numerous Law Enforcement to San Francisco

The Trump administration seemed ready on Wednesday to deploy scores of government officers to the northern California for a significant immigration enforcement operation, sparking criticism from state officials.

Information of the Mission

Information of the mission were continuing to unfold, but it will allegedly feature over a hundred law enforcement personnel, based on information. The agents are scheduled to begin using the US Coast Guard base in the East Bay, across the bay from San Francisco. It remained unclear whether military personnel would participate.

Government Backlash

The operation follows months of threats by Donald Trump to target the Democratic-run city. Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the action, calling it “straight from the autocrat's manual”.

“He sends out unidentified officers, he dispatches border agents, he deploys ICE, he instills concern and apprehension in the population so that he can lay claim for handling that by deploying the military forces,” Newsom said. “This is exactly like the firestarter fighting the fire.”

Local Planning

San Francisco is the newest major city focused on by the administration's initiative of widespread apprehensions. The deployment is expected to trigger a showdown between the administration and municipal authorities who have pledged to block armed border control in the city.

San Franciscans have been readying for months for Trump to make good on frequent statements to send troops to the city. At a Wednesday public announcement, San Francisco’s mayor stated again that the city was ready.

“For months, we have been anticipating the possibility of an impending government operation in our city,” stated the official, noting that he had enacted new policies on Wednesday to “strengthen the city’s protection of our foreign-born residents, and guarantee our agencies are coordinated prior to any federal deployment.”

Judicial Background

In spite of court battles to missions in a number of cities, including Chicago, Oregon and Southern California, Trump has claimed “complete control” to dispatch the national guard in cities, pointing to the presidential authority which allows presidents specific authority to deploy troops on domestic land.

Public Reaction

The governor, who was formerly as San Francisco’s mayor – had committed to step in “right away” to a mission in the city. “The concept that the federal government can deploy troops into our cities with no legitimate cause grounded in reality, no supervision, no responsibility, no respect for state sovereignty – it represents an infringement on the judicial framework,” he said on Wednesday.

Public associations, including civil rights groups created during the first Trump administration, have prepared to swiftly gather a large protest in the city, as well as candlelight gatherings at public spaces.

Community Impact

In San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood, a predominantly Latino community, city supervisor told reporters last week she and her voters had been bracing for this situation. “The time that employees avoid workplaces, when people of color cannot move about freely without the apprehension of national personnel targeting based on race and detaining them, the time when families keep children home, grow too frightened to go to the food market or physician,” she said. “What we have been preparing for in the Mission is essentially a halt the extent of which we have not witnessed since the health crisis.”

National Guard Status

Approximately 300 out of several thousand state military personnel stay under federal control under an order from Trump. Approximately several hundred of them had been dispatched to the Pacific Northwest, where they were waiting in limbo during a court case over their deployment.

This week, Newsom said he had summoned the local soldiers under his command to operate distribution centers amid the administrative stoppage.
