Trans director Sam Feder's recent film "Increased Examination" offers a compelling two-part viewpoint – both an intimate profile of a prominent transgender activist and a critical analysis of media coverage surrounding trans existence.
This documentary documents ACLU attorney Chase Strangio as he prepares for legal presentations in the important highest court case US v Skirmetti. This legal battle occurred in December 2024, with the judiciary eventually ruling in support of the state's case, effectively allowing limitations on healthcare for transgender young people to stay in effect across multiple US territories.
We made Heightened Scrutiny in only 16 months, shared Feder during a discussion. Meanwhile, my earlier film Disclosure took me half a decade, so this was quite rushed. Our goal was to stimulate discussion so people would learn more about the case.
While Feder presents a thorough critique of how mainstream media outlets have disseminated anti-trans narratives, the film's greatest contribution may be its captivating portrayal of Strangio. Normally a measured attorney in public settings, Strangio shows his humanity throughout the film.
That was a substantial challenge, to open up aspects of my life to a camera lens that I had strived to keep private, explained Strangio. Feder explained he wanted younger people to know that we struggled, to see what was done in defense of these battles for our material survival.
To strengthen Strangio's account, Feder includes multiple transgender advocates, including prominent figures from activism and the arts. The documentary also presents insights from non-trans advocates who critique how mainstream media outlets have added to damaging coverage of transgender individuals.
The experience of trans young people key to the legal case is illustrated through a remarkable 12-year-old girl named Mila. Audiences initially witness her advocating for her fellow students at a educational meeting, with subsequent footage showing her protesting for transgender rights outside the highest court.
Heightened Scrutiny also features touching moments where Feder transcends the constant legal struggle, such as scenes of Strangio vacationing in Italy and getting a body art featuring verses from activist Pauli Murray's poem "Prophecy."
This body art scene is among my most cherished sections in the movie, stated Strangio. Receiving body art is practically like a reflective experience for me, to be completely aware in my body and to consider it as a vessel for things that are important to me.
The filmmaker's dedication to thoughtfully capturing Strangio adding to his tattoo collection emphasizes that this documentary is primarily about transgender bodies – not just those of young people who confront prohibition of their ability to live authentically in their own bodies, but also the bodies of the numerous interviewees who appear in the production.
I create films with a purpose, and part of that is choosing people who are brilliant and concise enough to sustain the camera, shared Feder. When people ask me what they should wear for an interview, my answer is whatever makes you feel hot. This is important to me – as transgender individuals, we have difficulties so much with our self-perception.Legacy and Optimism
One factor that causes Feder's documentaries stand out is his obvious talent for making his transgender subjects feel comfortable, recognized and valued. This approach creates genuine chemistry between Feder and Strangio, enabling the filmmaker to realize his goal of showing Strangio as a whole human being and providing a document for coming generations of how resiliently he and fellow activists have campaigned for trans liberties.
I don't want people to end up in a place of incessant despair because of what the law is denying us, stated Strangio. I want to be in a process of using the law to lessen harm, but not to transform it into some type of conduit for our liberation possibilities. Official institutions is not going to be the reflection through which we see ourselves. We are that mirror, and it's extremely vital that we continue having that conversation alongside discussions about fighting back these policies and procedures.Heightened Scrutiny is currently obtainable for digital rental during Transgender Awareness Week and will receive a wider release at a later date.
