A courageous railway staff member who intervened to save travelers during a multiple knife attack on a express train has suffered life-threatening injuries, authorities confirmed on Sunday.
Surveillance footage reportedly depicts the employee trying to halt the attacker as the train traveled between a city and another station in the county. Witnesses recounted a terrifying 14-minute period after the train departed Peterborough, with bloodied passengers running through carriages.
The suspect, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, is in custody for interrogation. Police declared a major event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.
The incident on Saturday night led to 11 people being cared for in hospital after the train made an unplanned stop at the station in Huntingdon. Several individuals have since been discharged from medical care.
A witness recorded the suspect brandishing a large knife and being shot with a Taser as he faced officers on the platform. He was allegedly heard shouting, "Kill me, end my life."
âThis terrible incident has affected many people. Our sympathies go out to the injured and their loved ones â particularly the courageous member of rail staff whose relatives are being supported by specialist officers,â said a senior law enforcement official.
Rail associations were swift to commend staff and demand more action. One labor leader said he would be âseeking urgent discussions with authorities, train companies and law enforcement to ensure that we have the best available assistance, resources and robust protocols in operationâ.
A different association representative urged the train operator and authorities âto move quickly to examine safety, to help the impacted employees, and to make sure that no incident like this happens againâ.
The train driver who stopped the train at Huntingdon was reported as being âdeeply affectedâ but âwellâ, and has been commended by union representatives for doing âprecisely what was neededâ.
âHe didnât halt the service in the center of two stations where itâs clearly challenging for the emergency services to access, but he carried on traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was almost already there,â explained a union official.
Authorities said they received the initial emergency reports at 7:39 pm, and the train was forced to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
An observer recounted at first wondering if the event was a Halloween joke, but soon realized from people's faces that it was serious.
Authorities have stated there is no evidence to indicate the incident was a terror-related attack and have asked the public to provide with any additional details.
Rail services on the affected route are anticipated to experience delays until Monday, with passengers advised to defer their travel where feasible.
Individuals with information that could help the investigation are asked to contact police by texting a designated number with a case code.
